  HPV and Cancer

A colposcopy is a special method using an instrument called a colposcope to magnify the cervix approximately fifteen times allowing the doctor to see more than during a routine pelvic exam. This method is recommended for a variety of reasons: an abnormal Pap smear, cervical abnormalities, or a history of HPV (Human Papiloma Virus - the virus that causes genital warts). A biopsy is when the doctor takes small pinches of tissue from the cervix to be examined by a pathologist. The pathologist will report back to the doctor with her/his findings of abnormal cells. Laser surgery may be needed to remove abnormal cells, tissue or lesions.

Patients who need these services will be notified by a health educator. New patients to our center can call a health educator with questions and to set up an appointment for an exam and possible Colposcopy/Biopsy .
